Using the site of the ‘Park Street café’ on Nicholson St, Carlton North, we were tasked to design a hospitality venue within a 500 square-metre area. Our building proposals were developed inline with a meal of our choice, channelling the line “made in Australia from local and imported ingredients”. Dialect urged us to interrogate our selected meal, utilising the ‘local’ and ‘imported’ ideas we had investigated. Questions were soon realised, leading us to examine what is our meal as a dish? Or, is our building the dish? What does our meal say? The cultural aspects of our projects were of primary concern; thus any practical facets came secondary during the design process.
